DIY fan programs for outdoor wedding in Summer - tacky?

I've already went way over budget on my wedding and I forgot about the programs so I'm going to have to get into DIY mode. It is an outdoor wedding in SoCal and will be in July so it's going to be very hot! I thought the "fan" type programs would be a great thing to do but I'm hearing that a lot of people find these tacky.

My theme is bombay orchids (which are fuchsia) with lots of greenery and certain orange flowers as accents. Very breezy type wedding and will be at a restaurant on the Lake. I was thinking of using white cardstock with a faint orchid image in the background and then the "popsicle" type stick with a sage green ribbon tied around the handle. What do you think? Any other suggestions?

Not at all! My cousin used the "fan" idea at their wedding year before last b/c their wedding was in a park. Neat idea....add ribbons for a touch of class. Make sure to take your time and make them neat. Wish I could send a pic of hers...they're so cute...And I kept it too!
Reply:Good idea, as long as you can make it look neat and not like an elementary school project. It would be a nice favor.
Reply:I think that sounds awesome. i love the colors you chose too, i think it would look good.
Reply:I think it's a GREAT option! I had a friend do this for her wedding and she had the classiest and most beautiful event I've attended. It's practical and fun.
Reply:I think a fan program would be cool - I'd definitely keep that, whereas normally I just throw programs away.

They have the super cheap paper folding fans and some slightly nicer woven ones. Use your white cardstock to attach the programs to one of those.

The programs you are talking about are fine but by the time you get enough card stock to really make them functional you might as well have done the first option.

In the meantime call up your vendors and see if you can't scale back a few places to get yourself back under budget.
Reply:I think the programs will be fine and they'll be jus tthe way you want them
